Meet Captain Richard Delgado
A Passionate Crystal River Fishing Guide with Local Knowledge and a Lifetime on the Water
Fishing has been a core part of Captain Richard Delgado’s life since he was just five years old. What began as simple family outings with a cane pole and a box of bait quickly grew into a lifelong passion for exploring coastal waters. During his 20 years of honorable service in the U.S. Army, Richard had the opportunity to fish diverse locations across the globe, mastering a wide variety of angling techniques and water environments. When he retired from military service in 2022, he returned to his roots on Florida’s Gulf Coast and founded Tops Charters, fulfilling his vision of guiding guests through the productive shallow waters of Crystal River.
Over the years, Captain Richard has earned a well-deserved reputation as a knowledgeable, patient, and approachable local guide. His welcoming nature makes him a favorite among families, beginner anglers, and young kids eager to land their very first fish. Whether navigating shallow grass flats for Redfish, drifting quiet creek edges for Spotted Seatrout, or pointing out local wildlife along the way, Richard focuses on creating a comfortable environment where every guest feels involved. For Captain Richard, time on the water is about sharing local knowledge, building casting confidence, and helping visitors create genuine memories on the Nature Coast.
Safety, preparation, and professional standards are the foundation of Captain Richard’s guiding philosophy. As a fully licensed and insured USCG Captain with current CPR and First Aid certifications, he takes great pride in running a smooth, secure, and well-organized boat. Guests frequently appreciate his encouraging coaching style—whether he is explaining how moving tides influence fish behavior, demonstrating light-tackle techniques, or sharing insights into Crystal River’s unique ecosystem. With years of experience monitoring localized seasonal patterns, Captain Richard knows how to adapt to changing conditions so that his guests enjoy a productive and comfortable day on the water.
The Boat: 20’ Express Center Console
Tops Charters operates aboard a 20-foot Express center console, thoughtfully outfitted for stability, safety, and shallow-water performance. Equipped with modern navigation electronics, a quiet GPS trolling motor, twin livewells, and comfortable seating for up to three guests, the vessel provides an ideal platform for both inshore flats fishing and backwater creek exploration. Its shallow draft allows Captain Richard to quietly navigate the thin waters where Redfish and Snook feed, while its sturdy hull ensures a smooth, easy ride for families and anglers of all ages. Perfectly rigged for Crystal River’s diverse fishery, the boat offers a reliable, clean, and spacious environment for your day on the Nature Coast.
