Florida Fishing License Information for Travelers and Anglers
Planning a fishing trip to Crystal River with Tops Charters? Before you hit the water, it’s important to understand Florida fishing license requirements. This guide will help you know who needs a license, where to get one, what it costs, and who’s exempt—so you can enjoy your trip with confidence.
Who Needs a Florida Fishing License?
In Florida, most anglers between the ages of 16 and 64 must have a valid fishing license to fish in public waters. This applies to both saltwater and freshwater fishing. If you're joining a guided charter like Tops Charters in Crystal River, you're covered under the captain's commercial license—so you do not need to purchase a license for that trip. However, if you're fishing on your own before or after your charter, a license may be required.
Saltwater vs. Freshwater Licenses
Florida offers separate licenses for saltwater and freshwater fishing, as well as combination licenses. Crystal River is unique because it provides access to both types of water—saltwater inshore fishing for species like Redfish and Seatrout, and nearby freshwater bodies like Lake Henderson for Bass. Be sure to get the correct license for the type of fishing you're doing outside of charter trips.
Florida Fishing License Prices
For non-residents, the following license options are available:
- 3-day saltwater or freshwater license – $17
- 7-day license – $30
- Annual license – $47
For Florida residents, annual freshwater or saltwater licenses cost $17 each, or $32.50 for a combination license. Lifetime options are also available for residents.
Special Exemptions
You do not need a Florida fishing license if you are:
- Under 16 years old
- A Florida resident 65 or older (must show proof of age and residency)
- Fishing with a licensed charter captain (like on a trip with Tops Charters)
- Observing or assisting without actively fishing
How to Get a Fishing License in Florida
The easiest way to get a Florida fishing license is online through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) website or via the Fish|Hunt FL app. You can also purchase one in person at tackle shops, sporting goods stores, or local tax collector offices.
Tip from Tops Charters: If you’re fishing with us, you’re covered—no license needed. But if you’re planning to fish solo in Crystal River before or after your charter, be sure to pick the right license type.
